Active Families

Active Families

The Active Families programme is a Green Prescription initiative to improve the health of New Zealanders. The service supports children and their families to lead healthier and more active lifestyles through encouragement and education, nutritional guidance and advice, realistic goal setting and on-going support. We offer two programmes one for children aged 5 to 12 years and one for adults.

Children’s programme

Our  children’s programme runs throughout the year during school terms. A parent, caregiver or sibling over the age of 16 years must attend with the child.

The programme introduces families to a variety of games and indoor and outdoor sports and activities that they can enjoy and that will help them incorporate daily activity into their life. Healthy meals and snack ideas are also incorporated into the programme.

Children are generally referred to the Active Families children programme through their doctor, teacher, or school nurse. However families can also be referred through friends, families and neighbours. People may also refer themselves.

The programme generally runs for 12 weeks. People may join in at any time. An assessment is carried out on the child before starting the programme and when they finish. Programme graduates can continue as peer supporters for new people joining. All graduates are supported and encouraged to maintain an active lifestyle.

We currently have an after school programme and an evening programme. Both operate on Tuesdays.
